The Wine Tasting Group meet every month from September to May, with members taking it in turns to host the evening.
All participants share an enthusiasm for drinking wine and learning
about how it is made and where it is produced. Knowledge and experience
vary among the group, so everyone is welcome.
We taste (or rather drink!) about six wines per evening. The wines
are chosen against various criteria (grape variety, country of origin,
particular supplier etc.) Information on the origins and production of
the wines is provided and sometimes discussed, and everyone is encouraged to offer an opinion. Likes and dislikes are expressed together with views on value for money. Occasionally we amuse
ourselves with blind tastings. These allow everyone to demonstrate the
range of their knowledge (or the lack of it!).
The cost of each evening varies (according to numbers present and the
prices of the wines sampled), but is usually in the region of £6-£10 per
person. Tasting notes and tasting glasses are provided. The host chooses and buys the wine and then the bill is divided between the group and settled on the evening. The host also provides the notes for the evening.
Although the group size is listed as 12, this can obviously present problems with accommodation on the occasions when everyone turns up! The group leader's home is the default venue, but attendance usually hovers around ten per meeting, which makes it fairly easy for most members to host an evening (though we have managed somehow to all fit in when necessary).
Driving is discouraged, since we all wish to enjoy our
wine responsibly, and we have a local taxi service who can collect us and return us home safely.
